Now that we have finished learning about paragraph writing, we are moving on to procedures. A procedure tells us how to do or make something.

Examples of procedures can include recipes, directions, and instruction manuals.

We are spending every day this week building, sequencing, then writing five different procedures. After we have finished, students will choose their favourite one and go through the writing process to edit, revise, and publish.

So far we have learned that procedure should be specific, and in the right order.

Stay tuned for our co-created success criteria.

Next week, we will begin our PARAGRAPH unit in writing. We will spend a few weeks learning about the elements of a good paragraph, then we will practise writing our own opinion paragraphs on different topics.

A paragraph has:

  • an indent at the beginning
  • a catchy topic sentence
  • 3 details in the body
  • a closing sentence
  • transition words (next, furthermore, finally, etc.)
  • 5 Star sentences

5 Star Sentences

We are coming to the end of our unit on 5 Star Sentences. Students have learned all the elements of a 5 Star Sentence, and in the next few weeks we will have some Writers' Workshop sessions with a focus on applying this knowledge, and editing/publishing our work.  For those of you wanting to work on this skill at home, please have a look at our checklist for 5 Star Sentences. If students are able to include all of these things, they will have met our LEARNING GOAL for this unit.

5 Star Sentence Checklist

  • Uppercase Letters (at the beginning of a sentence, and on proper nouns)

  • Punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark)

  • Neat/Finger spaces (appropriate spacing between words, legible printing)

  • Spelling (word wall words are spelled correctly, unknown words are spelled using a strategy such as a dictionary or how it sounds)

  • Interesting/Makes Sense (use interesting words, make sure it makes sense)

Student Led Conferences

Student led conferences will be occurring the week of November 13-17th. Please look for a note in your child's agenda that will confirm the date and time of your conferences. Also, you will find attached a pre-conference survey that will give you a chance to let us (Ms. Walton and Ms. Manuge) know what you'd like to discuss at the meeting. This will be very helpful to us since our time together will be limited to only 10 minutes. It will help us focus our discussion.

*Please return both forms to school ASAP*

If you have any questions, please let me know by sending a message on Remind, OR by sending a note in your child's agenda.

Welcome To Grade 3!

Welcome to our class blog!

I am excited to have this new way for our AWESOME grade 3s to communicate their learning to you at home.

On the TOP of the home page there is a page for MATH LINKS and a page for LITERACY LINKS which will have information about game, websites, and apps that you can use at home to practice what we have been learning at school.

Please remember to check the blog regularly for information about upcoming events in our school and class, and for ideas about how you can support our learning at home.

Thanks so much! I look forward to communicating with you via our blog!
